Hot-Weather Notice
Heat stroke — know the signs.
Western Oklahoma heat is serious for dogs, especially the flat-faced breeds — pugs, boxers, bulldogs, French bulldogs. They can't cool themselves the way other dogs can.
Watch for
- Increased respiratory rate / heavy panting
- Dry, tacky gums
- Lethargy or weakness
- Abnormal mentation (disorientation, unresponsive)
- Seizures
If you see it
Move your dog to a cool place out of direct sun. Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water. Call us right away at (580) 254-3321 — don't wait to see if it gets better.
For Breeders
Canine progesterone testing — in-house.
We run canine progesterone in-house for breeders planning a litter — same-day results so timing decisions don't wait on an outside lab. This is uncommon in the region; most clinics ship out.
Common Questions
Flea & tick prevention — the honest answers.
We have heard it all. Here's the truth.
My dog never goes off our property — does she still need flea and tick prevention?
Yes. Fleas come in on wildlife, on visiting dogs, on people. Ticks ride in on grass clippings and clothing. The dog who 'doesn't need it' is the one we see with a tick-borne infection in August.
Aren't the over-the-counter products fine?
Some are; many aren't. Coverage is the issue — a product that kills fleas but not ticks won't stop ehrlichia or lyme. We'll tell you straight whether what you're using covers what you need.
What about garlic / essential oils / 'natural' options?
We have heard it all, and here's the truth: there's no natural option that reliably prevents tick-borne disease in this part of Oklahoma. We'd rather give you the honest answer than sell you something that doesn't work.
How often should I really be giving it?
Year-round. Our winters aren't cold enough or long enough to break the flea life cycle, and ticks are active any month we're above freezing for a few days.
